When it comes to buying effective cleaning products, most of us have to trust that the products we buy in store are safe and properly tested. Yes, we want an effective product, but it cannot have any consequences on our health.

Unfortunately, some cleaning products contain unregulated and dangerous chemicals, while some products can be dangerous when they come into contact with your skin.

Let’s take a look at 3 chemicals that could be hiding in your everyday cleaning products that you should avoid at all costs.

2-butoxyethanol – According to the US CDC, 2-butoxyethanol “is a colourless liquid with a mild odor. It can harm the eyes, skin, kidneys, and blood.” Although some tests have found it to be safe in low quantities (it is used in some cleaning products to dissolve grease), continual exposure or large-dose exposure may be harmful to your health.

Nonylphenol Ethoxylate – Already banned for sale in the EU, this product may still creep into products that aren’t properly regulated. It is extremely harmful to aquatic life and when it breaks down into nonylphenol, it can disrupt the human hormone system.

Butoxydiglycol – Also known as DEGBE, this solvent is used in aerosol cleaners, but banned in quantities above 3% per bottle. It can cause serious harm to the respiratory system, as well as inflame and irritate your lungs. Avoid if possible

So before you put that knock-off soap in your basket, be sure to read the label for any of these chemicals.
